Gulfstream G280: how it differs from its competitors

The four main super-midsize types fly on engines from the same Honeywell HTF7000 family, and their thrust ratings span a little over one kilonewton: 33.0–34.1 kN. All four share the same service ceiling of 13,716 m, and take-off weights differ by a tonne and a half. Here is where the G280 genuinely pulls ahead on that common technical base, and what the owner pays for it.
What the aircraft is
The G280 is a deep rework of the G200, carried out by Gulfstream Aerospace together with Israel Aerospace Industries. What carried over from the predecessor is the general concept and the class: the wing is new and more swept, the engines are new, the tail is a T-tail, and the cabin is 43 cm longer.
First flight was on 11 December 2009; Israeli and FAA certification came on 4 September 2012, and deliveries began the same year. One production version has been built since 2012, with no variants; 300 aircraft had been delivered by June 2025 and production continues.

The table shows how narrow the technical band is. Thrust spans one kilonewton, all four cruise at the same 45,000 ft, limiting Mach differs by one hundredth, and every type is flown by two pilots. Take-off weight stays inside 17,917–19,440 kg: the tonne and a half by which the Praetor 600 is heavier than the Longitude goes into additional fuel tanks, and that is where its range comes from. Gulfstream and Bombardier seat up to ten; Cessna and Embraer, eight to twelve.
Range is where the real difference sits. The rest is decided by things absent from the table: the service network, recognition of the records in your jurisdictions, and liquidity on exit.

Range: the G280's main advantage
6,667 km is 3,600 nautical miles, the best figure among its direct competitors: the Challenger 3500 gives 6,300 km, the Longitude 6,482 km, and the out-of-production Challenger 350 5,926 km.
In practice: the G280 flies London–New York without a stop, while its neighbours at the same budget go via an intermediate landing.
That figure then needs grounding. Catalogue range is calculated for a stated payload in still air; the real leg depends on passenger count, baggage, headwind and alternate. Six per cent of difference between 6,300 and 6,667 km turns into a fuel stop on a specific route in December. Check it against your own routes over the past two years.
The Praetor 600 stands apart in this comparison: 7,441 km, 774 km more.
Speed: where the Longitude takes time back
The Longitude holds 895 km/h against 850 km/h for the G280 and both Bombardier aircraft. Seven hours of G280 cruise covers 5,950 km; the Longitude covers the same in 6 hours 39 minutes. The gain is around twenty minutes, and it accumulates in sustained cruise.
Twenty minutes tells on a regular schedule with two or three flights a week: over a year it adds up to more than a day. On occasional flights the difference disappears into the noise of the time spent on the ground.
Assembly in two countries
IAI builds the airframe in Tel Aviv, after which the aircraft is ferried to the Gulfstream centre in Dallas for cabin, avionics, paint and pre-delivery testing.
Factory support runs through the Gulfstream service network familiar to G550 and G650 owners, while airframe spares logistics is tied to the Israeli manufacturer. That adds one question at the inspection stage: where the type is maintained in your region of basing, and what the lead times are on airframe items.
Fleet and market
Three hundred aircraft in thirteen years is a narrow fleet by class standards: the Challenger 350 reached the same 300 aircraft in its first five years, with 350 delivered by July 2020. Used-market listings for the G280 number in the single digits against dozens across the Challenger family, type-rated pilots take longer to find, and exiting the aircraft takes more time.
In the other direction a narrow fleet brings predictability: one version, one equipment standard by year.
Cabin
Layouts run from eight seats in a double club to nine or ten with a divan. There is an optional berth, a galley, an aft lavatory and in-flight baggage access — the last of which is not universal in the super-midsize class. The cabin is 43 cm longer than the G200's; cross-section dimensions are quoted by the manufacturer per specific layout.
The neighbours state the following. Challenger 3500 — a 2.19 × 1.85 m cross-section, the roomiest of the four; the airframe is inherited from the Challenger 350, which has the same section. Longitude — 7.67 × 1.96 × 1.83 m, flat floor. Praetor 600 — 8.18 × 2.08 × 1.83 m, flat floor and the longest cabin of the four.
A flat floor is the first thing people notice on six- to seven-hour legs at full load.

What to check on a specific aircraft
HTF7250G engines. Time on each, time remaining to the next removal, and hourly-cost programme status: active coverage transfers to the new owner and counts as an asset in the deal.
Hours and cycles separately, calendar checks by date. A 2013 aircraft has noticeably more checks behind it than a 2022 one.

What each neighbour takes from the G280
The Challenger 3500 takes the cabin. A 2.19 × 1.85 m cross-section is the roomiest of the four, backed by the 300/350 family service base. It gives up 367 km of range. Differences inside the Bombardier family are covered in the Challenger 350 article.
The Longitude takes time and seats. Twenty minutes on a seven-hour leg, up to twelve seats, a flat floor, and the lightest take-off weight of the four at 17,917 kg — the figure many airports use to calculate fees.
The Praetor 600 takes range. 7,441 km, 774 km more, and the longest cabin at 8.18 m. The price is 19,440 kg of take-off weight, top of the four for airport fees.
What stays with the G280 is the combination. A transatlantic sector in one hop with up to ten on board, plus the Gulfstream service network familiar to G550 and G650 owners. A sensible utilisation threshold is from 200 hours a year.

The G280 wins on range: 6,667 km against 6,300–6,482 km for its direct competitors, and a transatlantic leg without a stop. One production version across thirteen years moves the whole of the buyer's work onto the records and the condition of the components.
The price is a narrow fleet of 300 aircraft, a long search for a listing, and a slow exit.
