Embraer Praetor 600: how it differs from its competitors
The Praetor 600 entered service in 2019 with a range of 7,441 km and became the longest-legged super-midsize jet in the world at the moment of its launch. The nearest rival in the class falls 774 km short. I go through where the aircraft parts company with the Citation Longitude, the Gulfstream G280 and the Challenger 3500 on confirmed figures, and where it gives ground to those same rivals.

The prices are market reference points as of August 2026, to my information. The price of a particular aircraft is calculated from its documents, its hours flown and its configuration.
Full specifications are on the model page. The neighbours in the comparison: the Citation Longitude, the Gulfstream G280 and the Challenger 3500.
Difference one: range that nobody else in the class has
7,441 km against 6,667 km for the nearest rival. A difference of 774 km comes to something like an hour of flight, and on a route network it turns into specific legs.
In the type documentation: London to New York, São Paulo to Miami, Dubai to London with no stop. For the super-midsize class that is the set of a large jet.
The range came out of three reworkings of the original Legacy 500: additional fuel tanks, new winglets, more powerful Honeywell HTF7500E engines. The gain from the 5,788 km of the predecessor to 7,441 km comes to plus 1,653 km on the same airframe.
A practical caveat that applies to all four types. A leg longer than eighty-five per cent of the book range is planned with a technical stop or with a reduced payload. For the Praetor 600 the working boundary sits at around 6,300 km, for the G280 at around 5,670 km.
Difference two: the digital controls of the EMB-550 platform
The Praetor 600 inherits full digital fly-by-wire controls with active turbulence suppression — a platform solution of the EMB-550 family, which covers the Legacy 450, the Legacy 500, the Praetor 500 and the Praetor 600.
Of the four aircraft in the comparison, a system of that kind is confirmed by the documentation only for the Embraer. The Challenger 3500 gained autothrottle in its 2021 update, and the Longitude comes with autothrottle as part of the Garmin G5000. The avionics of the Praetor 600 are Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion.
For the owner this delivers two things: a level ride through turbulence at cruise altitude, and a lighter load on the crew on a long leg, where the aircraft flies for eight or nine hours.
Difference three: a cabin 1.83 metres high with a flat floor
Cabin height is 1.83 m, the floor is flat along its whole length, and cabin pressure at cruise altitude corresponds to an altitude of 5,800 feet. Layouts run from 8 seats — two club fours — to 12 seats with a divan; a galley with full catering forward, a lavatory aft, Ka-band satellite internet among the options.
The Longitude answers with the same height of 1.83 m at a cabin length of 7.67 m and a cabin pressure equivalent to 1,800 m at cruise altitude. The two aircraft stand close together here, and the choice between them is settled by range and by money.
The G280 and the Challenger 3500 run to ten seats against the twelve of the Embraer and Cessna pair. For a group of ten people with baggage on a long leg that is a tangible difference in the freedom to arrange the cabin.
Difference four: a factory route out of the previous generation
Embraer keeps a programme for upgrading delivered Legacy 500s to the full Praetor 600 standard: tanks, winglets, systems. Of the four types in the comparison, a factory route from the previous generation to the current one exists only here.
On the market that works in both directions. The owner of a Legacy 500 gets a way to reach the new range while keeping the aircraft. The buyer of a Praetor 600 gets a second line of supply and an obligation to read the records: an upgraded aircraft keeps the build year of its airframe and the hours flown on it.
Difference five: the type continues and works as a platform
The Praetor 600 remains in production. Alongside civil deliveries it serves as a base for special versions — aerial survey, inspection, medical evacuation in individual countries.
For a buyer of a pre-owned aircraft a live programme means three things: availability of components, crew training, and a clear horizon on service across the whole term of ownership.
Where the Praetor 600 gives ground
Speed. 863 km/h against the 895 km/h of the Longitude. On an eight-hour leg the difference comes to roughly a quarter of an hour, and part of the gain in range goes back to the rival here.
Depth of the market. Twelve aircraft are on offer, and that is 7–8% of the fleet: 149 aircraft of the type in the world in all. The G280 had 300 aircraft delivered to customers by June 2025. A narrow fleet means a longer search for the configuration you want and a longer way out of the asset on resale; how that is calculated is in the review of time on the market.
Entry price. A median of $24 million against a pre-owned G280 from $11.9 million. The gap is twofold, and a buyer for whom 6,667 km is enough closes the task substantially cheaper.
Standing in Russia. A type certificate in Russia has not been confirmed for the Praetor 600, and the type is all but absent from the Russian register. For a route network inside the country that is a separate block of questions on the jurisdiction of registration and on the operator.
Who it suits
Praetor 600 — regular legs of six to nine hours with a group of up to twelve people, where the range of a large jet is needed at the running costs of the super-midsize class. Transatlantic and Middle East flights out of Europe with no technical stop.
Citation Longitude — the same twelve seats on routes of up to six hours, when speed and entry price weigh more.
Gulfstream G280 — a task of up to 6,600 km with ten passengers and a tight purchase budget. The type has been on the market since 2012, and the choice of pre-owned aircraft is wider.
Challenger 3500 — a young aircraft in production with a cabin in the styling of the flagship line. Public offers on the pre-owned market are almost non-existent, and the way in runs through the factory.
At a hundred hours a year and legs of up to three hours any of the four aircraft carries air: the fixed part of the costs stays where it is, and the capability of the airframe goes unused. How the classes map onto the mission is set out in the review of business jet categories.
What to check on a particular aircraft
Origin. A factory Praetor 600, or a Legacy 500 after the upgrade. The records confirm it.
Hours and cycles as separate figures for the airframe and for each engine. The spread across the listed aircraft runs from 80 to 3,179 hours.
Engines. Time remaining to the next removal, the status of the hourly cost programme, the terms on which it passes to the new owner.
Configuration. A HUD with an enhanced vision system, a Ka-band channel, the finish package, the number of seats. That list is exactly what spreads the price of aircraft built in the same year.
Avionics and upgrades. What is fitted now, and what will have to be installed for your airspaces over the next two years.
Documents. Gaps in the records, service bulletins left undone, components without confirmed origin. Every item translates into money. The list of questions for the seller is in the article on what to ask before the conversation about price.
Conclusion
The Praetor 600 takes range and the digital controls of the EMB-550 platform at twelve seats and a cabin 1.83 m high. The Longitude answers with speed and entry price, the G280 with the depth of the pre-owned market, the Challenger 3500 with the freshness of a new aircraft in production.
Beyond that the particular aircraft decides: origin according to the records, hours and cycles flown, time remaining on each engine, the status of the maintenance programmes, and the scope of upgrades needed for your route network.
