Business jet categories: which aircraft suits which route
The private aviation market divides aircraft into eight classes. This is not a marketing convention — it is the grid used to price a flight, match an aircraft to a request and compare offers. Once you understand it, you stop paying for an aircraft you do not need.

How to choose: three questions instead of a catalogue
Picking an aircraft is not about which one looks better. It comes down to three answers that narrow the field to one or two options.
Question 1. Will it get there without a stop?
The range quoted in the specifications assumes ideal conditions: full fuel, minimum passengers, a tailwind. Real range is lower, and it drops further as you fill the cabin with people and baggage.
A practical rule: if your route uses more than 85% of the aircraft's book range, plan for a technical stop. It adds an hour to an hour and a half plus the cost of the extra landing — sometimes it is cheaper to go straight to the class above.
Question 2. Can it land at the airport you need?
This is what people think about last, and it is settled first. Not every airport takes heavy aircraft: runway length and surface matter, as do the aerodrome category, the presence of customs and border control for international flights, and the hours of operation.
The classic case: the client needs a resort airfield with a short runway in the mountains and picks a Heavy for the comfort — but only a Light or a turboprop can get in there. The airport dictates the class more often than the distance does.
Question 3. How many of you, and with what?
This is where money is lost most often — people take an aircraft with room to spare. Empty seats cost the same as occupied ones.
Count the baggage, not just the people. The baggage compartment on light jets is small; skis, golf bags and large suitcases for a party of six may not fit into a Light Jet even if everyone fits in the seats. That is exactly the case where moving up a class is justified — not "to have more room".

The key dividing line runs between Midsize and Heavy. Below it you are buying transport; above it you are buying the ability to sleep and work properly in flight. On overnight transcontinental legs that stops being a luxury: the difference between arriving wrecked and arriving fit to work is worth the money.
Common mistakes when choosing
Choosing by name. "I want a Gulfstream" is not a request, it is a brand. Within the model line, range and capacity vary several times over.
Looking at range and forgetting the runway. The aircraft will cover the distance but will not land where you need it.
Saving on class for a night flight. Eight hours sitting in a cabin you cannot stand upright in is a saving you regret within the first hour.
Taking a higher class just in case. Every empty seat is paid for.
Ignoring where the aircraft is coming from. An aircraft that is perfect on class but parked two thousand kilometres away will cost more than a less convenient one that is already nearby. The positioning flight is on the invoice.
The order of work
- Fix the route with specific airports, not cities.
- Check which classes both ends can accept.
- Count passengers and baggage honestly.
- Rule out the aircraft that would need a technical stop.
- From what is left, take the most economical rather than the most comfortable — unless it is a night flight longer than five hours.
- Ask where the aircraft being offered is right now.
The sixth point can move the final price more than everything that came before it.
