How much a Leonardo AW139 costs: purchase price and upkeep
A new AW139 on the list costs around $14–15 million; a pre-owned one goes for $5–8 million, to my information. The gap is more than double, and inside the pre-owned range the aircraft spread another three million. Here is what makes up the price of a particular airframe, what is added to it before the first flight, and how the upkeep of a medium twin-engine helicopter is calculated.

What makes up the three-million spread
Year of build and nose generation. The type has been in production since 2003, and the configurations changed over that time. Early Agusta-Bell aircraft under the AB139 designation, the original production version with the short nose, and later aircraft with the extended nose fairing and an additional avionics bay are three different states under one name in a listing.
Life-limited components. A helicopter has noticeably more of them than an aeroplane: main and tail rotor blades, hubs, the main gearbox, transmission assemblies. Each has time remaining to replacement or overhaul, and each has a price for that work. The sum of the remaining lives explains the difference between two aircraft of the same year better than the year does.
Hourly cost programmes. Pratt & Whitney Canada engines are maintained under programmes. Active cover passes to the new owner and counts as an asset in the deal. Buying into a programme retroactively costs more than continuous participation, and a seller without cover either builds that into the discount or does not — in which case the buyer builds it in.
Configuration. Three different aircraft stand on one airframe: a corporate cabin for six to ten, a dense passenger layout up to fifteen seats, and a special-mission version with a medical module, hoist, searchlight and thermal imager. Moving between configurations means work and re-documentation. Cost the conversion as a separate line before the deal.
The increased gross weight kit. The type's base maximum takeoff weight is 6,400 kg. The increased gross weight kit raises it to 6,800 or 7,000 kg, and the gain converts into fuel or into people and cargo. The presence of the kit is verified in the paperwork: installed, documented, in force.
Operating history. Offshore transport to platforms means sea air and constant corrosion treatment. The corrosion records say more about the state of the airframe than the total hours figure does.
Place of assembly. Vergiate in Italy, Philadelphia in the United States, and previously licensed assembly in Russia at HeliVert. That determines the set of documents and which service centre carries the aircraft onward.
What is added to the price before the first flight
Exact sums depend on the jurisdiction, the delivery route and the date. Here is the structure and what sets the order of the figures.

A separate line is cabin conversion. An aircraft in an air ambulance or offshore fit costs less than a corporate one, and the difference looks like a win right up to the conversion estimate.
How upkeep is calculated
Costs divide into two parts, and confusing them produces most of the mistakes in a budget.
The fixed part runs whether you flew or not. Hangar and parking, insurance, calendar maintenance, continuing airworthiness, crew and engineer salaries, keeping ratings current and simulator time, and management of the aircraft.
The variable part is calculated from hours. Fuel, line maintenance, hourly checks, reserve contributions towards engine and life-limited component overhaul, and ground handling at destinations.
The heaviest line here is the reserve. Every component has an interval to overhaul; the cost of that overhaul is divided by the interval and set aside from each hour. On the gas turbines and the main gearbox the sums run into tens of millions of roubles, and the work falls due whether or not there was demand for flying that year.
Annual hours decide more than anything. At a hundred hours a year the fixed part lands on each hour as a hundredth; at four hundred, as a four-hundredth. The aircraft is the same and the hourly cost differs fourfold. An average figure for "the hourly cost of an AW139" without stating the annual hours and the maintenance scheme misleads.
Ferry legs are counted separately. The helicopter sits at its own base. A flight from a point where the aircraft is not drags ferry hours in both directions behind it. The life is consumed the same with people on board and without them.

When the type is justified on money
The AW139 covers the task of "fifteen people or a VIP cabin, about a thousand kilometres of working leg, flights over water and over a city". The second engine works here as a condition of entry: over the sea and over a large city a single will not take the task.
The threshold beyond which ownership begins to add up follows from the same arithmetic: the fixed part is divided by the annual hours, and at low utilisation it eats the budget on its own. With ownership comes the need for infrastructure — crew, engineer, base, spares — and keeping that goes into the fixed part too.
There is a third scenario. The aircraft is handed to an operator for management, and part of the fixed costs is covered by commercial flights. That mode consumes life and increases reserve contributions at the same time. The size of the offset is calculated from the particular aircraft, its base and demand. At fifty hours a year a medium twin is bought for the availability of the aircraft at the moment it is needed. That is a working reason; it is worth saying out loud rather than bending a payback calculation around it.
The order of work
Set the budget inside the $5–15 million range: the difference here is the year of build, the remaining life on components, the status of programmes and the configuration.
Ask for two figures separately on every candidate: hours flown and number of landings. An offshore aircraft accumulates landings faster than a corporate one at the same hours.
Check the status of the engine and gearbox programmes with the date of the last payment.
Assemble the list of work due in the next twelve months, by hours and by calendar. Two aircraft half a million apart in the listings often converge after that addition.
Confirm the configuration and its paperwork: medical module, hoist, floats, increased gross weight kit — every position is confirmed by documents.
Calculate your actual annual hours from your past movements. Plans for the future do not go into that calculation.
Conclusion
The AW139 price in a listing describes the airframe. The cost of entry is made up of the price, the remaining life on components, the status of programmes and the first year's work — and that total differs from the sticker by an amount comparable to the discount you will negotiate.
