How much it costs to buy a helicopter: real 2026 prices
When someone decides to buy a helicopter, they usually come with a single figure in their head — the price of the aircraft. Then it turns out that the price of the aircraft is about half the conversation. Below are the real prices as of August 2026 by class (we keep our own database of listings from Controller, HeliTrader, AvBuyer and Russian marketplaces), and everything that gets added to that price.
A caveat straight away: any "price for a model" without the year, the flight hours and the configuration is a meaningless number. The same AW169 can cost $6.9 million and $14 million, and both sellers will be right.
Light single-engine: from $150 thousand to $3.5 million
The most straightforward and the most liquid segment. Here there is a real market with open prices — hundreds of aircraft for sale at the same time.
From 1 January 2026 Robinson raised factory prices by 5%. The R44 Raven I now costs $553 500, the Raven II $646 000. On the pre-owned market R44s go from $150 thousand (old machines with high hours) up to $860 thousand; the median of the working range is around $600 thousand. To give a sense of the depth of the market: on Controller alone 131 aircraft across the whole R44 line are listed at once. Note this: late-model pre-owned machines cost more than a new aircraft from the factory — a consequence of the delivery queue.
The R66 NxG in base trim (Southwood) is $1 456 000, in top Riviera trim $1 777 500. The overall range of listings is $650 thousand – $1.78 million, median $1.35 million. But 32 of the 47 aircraft for sale are new, so the top of the range is factory pricing, not the pre-owned market.
Among turbine five-seaters, the ones our clients take most often are the EC130 and the Bell 407. The EC130 is $1.7–2.55 million, median $1.95 million; the Bell 407 is $2.68–3.35 million, median $2.9 million (this is the most liquid single-engine turbine on the market, 29 aircraft on Controller). The Bell 505 is cheaper — $1.1–2.3 million, median $1.45 million. A new H125 is $3.0–3.5 million.
Light twin-engine: $2.5–14 million
A second engine is not "extra power", it is clearance to operate. Flights over cities, over water, at night, under instrument rules, air ambulance work — almost everywhere a twin-engine machine is required. Hence the price.

For the Ansat, 2026 is a special year. In April a pool of 11 aircraft went to auction for a combined total of more than 1.3 billion roubles — that is about 118 million roubles per machine, roughly $1.3–1.5 million. Lots like these go "as is", often after a long spell out of service. And the main question on any Ansat today is which engine it has. Machines with the Canadian PW207K are cheaper, but their support is under sanctions; series deliveries of the version with the Russian VK-650V began only in 2026, and there are no in-service statistics on it yet.
Separately on the Bell 429: the gap between new and late-model used is close to zero. A 2018 aircraft with low hours goes for $6 975 000, new from the factory is $6.4–7.3 million. If the budget is in this zone, a factory order is usually the more sensible route — warranty, current avionics, configuration to your own specification. Savings on the pre-owned market start lower down, with 2011–2015 aircraft.
Medium and heavy: the Mi-8, the AW139 and beyond
We operate the Mi-8AMT, so on this type I speak without hedging. A new Mi-171E is $10–12 million. On the pre-owned market the spread is enormous, $6.2–20.5 million, and it is explained almost entirely not by year of build but by the life remaining on components. An Mi-8MTV-1 after overhaul goes for $4.1–6 million, and that is a fair price right up to the next heavy maintenance check. The Mi-171A2 under export contracts reaches $32 million — but that is a delivery with a support package, not the price of the machine. A new offshore Mi-171A3 is around 1 billion roubles, that is $11–13 million.
Western medium types: the AW139 at $5–8 million pre-owned against $14–15 million new; the S-76 has fallen sharply, median $2.2 million. Heavy: the S-92 from $6.5 million used against a factory price of $27 million, the H225 at $10–27 million, the Mi-26T at $20–25 million.
What else there is to pay once you have decided to buy a helicopter
This is the part usually left out of the budget. Exact amounts depend on the jurisdiction, the type and the date — quoting them as a "price list" would be a lie, so what follows is the structure and what sets the order of magnitude.

Configuration is a line of its own. More than half of the Ansats available on the Russian market and some of the Western aircraft come in air ambulance configuration. Converting to a passenger or VIP version is not a matter of "taking the module out", it is work plus re-documentation. On the AW169 an EMS-to-VIP conversion is budgeted at $1.5–3 million.
Ownership per year, and when chartering is simpler
Annual costs divide into two parts. Fixed — parking, insurance, calendar checks, the salaries of crew and engineer, keeping the documentation current. They are paid whether you flew or not. Variable — fuel, contributions to the reserve for engine and component overhaul, hourly checks.
The key figure here is the overhaul reserve. Every component has a time between overhauls, and the cost of the overhaul is divided across it. For gas turbine engines this is the heaviest item: an overhaul costs tens of millions of roubles, and it will come due whether or not there was demand for flying that year.
The practical benchmark we give clients: compare the charter rate from the table with your actual annual flight hours. If you fly less than 100–150 hours a year, the fixed costs of ownership will almost certainly outweigh what you save on the hour — chartering will come out simpler and more predictable. Above that threshold ownership starts to make sense, but by then it requires proper operational infrastructure: crew, engineer, base, spares store. In practice this means that a helicopter for 50 hours a year is bought not for the arithmetic but for having the aircraft available at the moment you need it — and that is a perfectly normal reason, it just has to be called by its name.
A separate scenario is placing the aircraft under an operator's management: fixed costs are then partly covered by commercial flying. We work this way, but no honest operator will promise specific return figures — they depend on the type, the region, the season and the contracts.
Frequently asked questions
Which helicopter is cheapest to buy and to run? The Robinson R44 — $150–860 thousand pre-owned, around $600 thousand for a typical sound machine. A piston engine is cheaper to maintain than a turbine. The limitations: three passengers, flights under visual flight rules only, and over cities and water effectively not at all.
New or used? It depends on the class. In the light segment the pre-owned market gives real savings. In the $5–8 million class the gap often disappears: a late-model 2018 Bell 429 costs $6.975 million against a factory price of $6.4–7.3 million — here ordering new is the more logical route.
How long does a deal take? From two or three months for a light machine inside the country to six months and longer when importing from abroad — most of the time is eaten by acceptance, customs and registration, not by the search for the aircraft itself.
What do people most often get wrong in the budget? Component life. An aircraft with an attractive price and an engine overhaul falling due is the price of the aircraft plus the overhaul. That is why the actual life remaining is checked component by component, not by the machine's age on paper.
