What a helicopter flight hour costs — an operator does the maths
When a client asks about a helicopter for the first time, they almost always work it out from fuel. The logic is clear: the burn is known, the price of jet fuel is known — multiply the two and you have the cost of an hour. By that arithmetic an hour on a Mi-8 comes out at around fifty thousand roubles, and then the conversation turns to why the operator's price list shows a figure several times higher.
Here is what actually makes up a flight hour.
What goes into the cost of an hour
Fuel — from 15 to 25% of the cost of an hour. This is the only line the client usually counts.
Reserves for engine and component overhaul. Every unit has a time between overhauls, and the cost of that overhaul is divided across it — which gives the sum the operator sets aside from every flight hour. For gas turbine engines this is the heaviest item: an overhaul costs tens of millions of roubles, and it has to be done whether or not a client turns up next month.
Scheduled maintenance — checks driven by flight hours and by the calendar. Calendar work gets done even if the aircraft has sat in the hangar all year.
Crew. Salary, keeping qualifications current, simulators, medicals. The crew is paid continuously, not only on flying days.
Insurance — hull and third-party liability.
Parking and hangarage. Hangar storage costs more in winter, but without it the aircraft ages faster.
Depreciation and the cost of money. Either the aircraft was bought outright — and then that money is not working somewhere else — or it is on lease, and then there is a payment.
Why the empty repositioning flight is billed
The second question after the hourly rate is why the invoice shows more hours than the client flew.
A helicopter sits where it is based. If the client needs to depart from a point where the aircraft is not, it has to be flown there and brought back after the trip. The client pays for those hours, because engine life is consumed the same either way — with passengers or without.
That is exactly why short flights away from base come out disproportionately expensive: an hour in the air with the client can drag two hours of repositioning behind it.

These are wet charter rates — with crew, fuel and insurance. On the Mi-8 and the Ansat the Russian market runs closer to the lower bound, European operators closer to the upper.
When it is better to buy and when to charter
A simple benchmark: up to 100–150 annual flight hours, chartering is almost always simpler and more predictable. Ownership starts to make sense when annual flight hours are consistently higher and when the aircraft has to be available on demand rather than by advance request.
There is a third scenario people forget: buy the aircraft and place it under management with an operator who will sell your spare hours as charter. That will not make the helicopter free and does not turn it into a source of income — those hours cover part of the fixed costs, but at the same time they consume component life and increase the amounts going into the overhaul reserve. Exactly how much the cost of ownership comes down is calculated for the specific aircraft, base and demand, not from a general rule.
What to ask the operator before signing
- How much life is left before the next engine overhaul, and who pays for it?
- Is the repositioning flight included in the price, and how is it calculated?
- What happens if the flight is cancelled for weather — is the money refunded or carried over?
- Is there a replacement aircraft if the primary one goes into maintenance?
- What are the restrictions on landing sites — where will the aircraft go in, and where will it not?
The last question matters more than it seems. An attractive-looking site by a country house often turns out to be unusable because of the slope, the approaches or the size — and that comes to light on the day of the flight.
