Mi-8 flight hour: what the operator's invoice covers

The Mi-8 carries shift crews, medical teams, film units and VIP cabin passengers, so its hourly price has to be quoted more often than that of any other machine. As far as I know, the cost price of a Mi-8 flight hour in 2024, with everything included, came out at around 250,000 roubles — and that is before the operator's margin. The figure in the price list sits above it.
Here is the Mi-8 hour line by line: what the operator puts inside the rate, and where the deductions the customer never sees on the invoice come from.
What a Mi-8 flight hour costs
| Figure | What stands behind it |
|---|---|
| 100,000 – 350,000 ₽/hour | the spread of a helicopter flight hour on the market, all classes |
| around 250,000 ₽/hour | Mi-8 cost price in 2024, everything included, before the operator's margin |
| 120,000 – 140,000 ₽/hour | a fully depreciated Mi-8T a couple of years ago, at a profit |
| $1,800 – 8,500/hour | wet charter in the medium class; the Mi-8 and Mi-171 sit closer to the lower bound |
The sums are as far as I know.
The second and third rows split the same type into different money. A machine whose purchase is closed carries neither a lease payment nor the cost of the money frozen in it, and its operator stays profitable at a rate that would not cover his neighbour's costs. Both of them count honestly.
The overhaul reserve is the heaviest line
An hour of flight is written off against the service life of the engines, the main gearbox and the airframe. The orders of magnitude across the family:
| Item | To overhaul | Total service life |
|---|---|---|
| TV3-117 engine (Mi-8MTV, Mi-8AMT) | 2,000 – 3,000 h | 6,000 – 7,500 h |
| VK-2500PS-03 engine | 2,000 h and 2,000 cycles | 6,000 h and 6,000 cycles |
| TV2-117 engine (Mi-8T) | about 1,500 h | up to 12,000 h |
| Mi-8T airframe, later production | 1,500 h / 5 years | 23,000 h / 30 years |
The TV3-117 and VK-2500 figures come from service life extension rulings and manufacturers' publications; for the TV2-117 there is no primary document in the public domain, so treat that row as an indication. For the main gearbox, open sources give no figures at all.
The arithmetic that follows is simple: the cost of an overhaul is divided by the time between overhauls, and the operator sets aside the result with every hour. On gas turbine engines this is the largest single position inside the hour, and it does not depend on whether a customer turns up next month.
One detail matters for the customer: service life is an attribute of the individual machine. It is extended by the design authority — Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Centre for the airframe, UEC-Klimov for the engines — with GosNII GA taking part, and the decision is fixed by a service bulletin. The same variant at two operators can have a different remaining life and a different date for the next overhaul. This is read from the logbooks of the machine that will turn up for your flight.
Maintenance follows steps of flight time
Scheduled maintenance on the Mi-8MTV-1 and neighbouring variants is tied to steps of 150, 300, 450, 600 and 750 flight hours, with the scope of work growing at the multiples. Between the steps comes line maintenance: the after-flight check, the work that prepares the machine for parking, and the pre-departure check.
Calendar and seasonal checks live separately — the switch to autumn-winter operation and back to spring-summer. They are tied to the calendar, and a helicopter that has stood a year without a single flight goes through them in full. Civil maintenance on the Mi-8AMT is carried out by Barguzin, a subsidiary of the Ulan-Ude plant: bases in Moscow and Ulan-Ude plus mobile teams.
Crew, insurance, parking
The Mi-8 crew is three people against a single pilot on a light turbine machine. Salary, currency maintenance, medicals and simulators run in a steady stream, months without flying included. Type conversion is available at the Ulan-Ude plant's training centre: simulators and interactive systems, with programmes for Russian pilots approved by Rosaviatsia and for foreign ones by their own authorities. There is no ab initio training there; they convert pilots from other types, light Eurocopters included.
The insured value follows the price of the machine, and the spread inside the family is wide. From open listings of 2024–2025, as far as I know, a 2006 Mi-171E in a VIP layout was offered at $6.2m, and a new Mi-171E at $20.5m. A fresh machine in the fleet lifts this line of the hour noticeably.
Parking for a medium helicopter is its own matter too: a maximum take-off weight of 13 tonnes and a main rotor diameter of 21.29 metres. There are fewer pads and hangars ready to take a machine like that than for a light one.
Fuel takes less than it seems
A client working out the hour on his own usually multiplies consumption by the price of kerosene and arrives at a figure several times below the price list. Fuel takes 15 to 25 per cent of the cost of the hour; the rest is the lines above. A detailed breakdown of every position in the flight hour is in the piece on what an hour of helicopter flying costs.
What gets added to the hour on the invoice
The rate covers the flight. On top of it the invoice picks up repositioning from base to the point of departure and back, waiting time on the ground, landing fees at both ends, and crew accommodation when the return leg slips to the next day. Many operators have a daily minimum, and on a short leg the customer pays it in full. How this adds up to a final sum I showed on the example of a day trip in the piece on the price of an hour of helicopter charter.
Why the same Mi-8 is quoted at different money
The variant. The Mi-8T has TV2 engines and the VR-8 gearbox, and production of these machines ended in 1991–1993; an engine failure under load there means a forced landing. The Mi-8AMT has TV3 engines: the flight continues on one. On the AMT the tail rotor was moved to the other side, giving more yaw control margin, and the avionics allow instrument flight.
The cabin layout. In a VIP configuration the Mi-8 takes about eight passengers, in a passenger one 22 to 24. The interior lands in the price of the machine, in the insurance and in the rate.
Remaining service life. A helicopter two hundred hours from an engine overhaul and a helicopter straight out of one live in different economics.
How the purchase is funded. A lease payment sits inside the hour; closed depreciation does not.
From my own practice
The figures above I take from my own machines: our fleet holds a Mi-8AMT and a Eurocopter EC130 T2, and the difference in upkeep between a medium and a light helicopter is visible on one apron. What you pay for on the "eight": a cabin 1.80 metres high, the only one in its class — you stand upright in it, and it takes a wheeled vehicle such as a UAZ or two medical modules for four people. Payload up to four tonnes in the cabin and as much again on the sling, up to five on the AMT and A2 variants. Those capabilities are what stands behind every line of the hour above. We answer an enquiry within the working day; round-the-clock support is something I do not promise.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my programme if an engine runs out of life mid-season?
The machine goes to the plant. Overhauls are carried out only by certified repair organisations, after which new sections of the logbooks are issued and a new time between overhauls is set. The repair plant controls the timing; the operator has few levers there. When a programme is booked months ahead, ask for the remaining life as of the date of your last flight, and ask as well what the operator will substitute if the machine leaves earlier.
The operator has two Mi-8s and quotes one rate. Which machine will arrive?
A contract usually fixes the type, which leaves the operator free to send any of his helicopters of that variant. Between two "eights" at one operator the difference can lie in the cabin, in the instrument flight equipment and in the remaining service life. If you inspected a particular machine and counted on its cabin, write it into the request by serial number.
Does a flight hour cost more in winter?
Look at the ground lines. Hangar storage costs more in winter than standing outside, and without it the machine ages faster. The seasonal work for the switch to autumn-winter operation is done by the calendar and lands in the costs regardless of hours flown. For a winter flight, check whether the hangar and pre-departure heating are included in the offer, and how much time the operator allows for preparing the machine in the cold.
