Leonardo AW139: specifications, range, cabin
The AW139 carries up to 15 people over 1,250 km at 306 km/h — on range that is the best figure among the medium helicopters in my database after the Airbus H175. Here are the book figures and how they look in service: what the aircraft actually covers with a load, what fits in the cabin, and which positions set the price of a particular airframe.

Manufacturer data and open sources. Exact figures for a particular aircraft come from its flight manual: equipment and modifications change the weights, and with them the range and the payload.
Range: what is left of 1,250 kilometres
Book range is calculated with no wind, no reserve for an alternate and in a configuration with full fuel. In service three things come off that figure.
Payload. Fifteen seats in a dense layout and full fuel are not taken at the same time. Every person with baggage above the calculated load takes fuel, and with it kilometres.
Temperature and elevation of the site. A takeoff from a high site on a hot day limits the takeoff weight, and the fuel load is cut first.
Reserve. A flight is planned with a reserve for an alternate and for holding. That volume is not part of book range.
From that comes the simple arithmetic of planning: the book figure is taken with a margin, and what is left after the three deductions above sits closer to a thousand kilometres than to 1,250. Beyond that mark a route is planned with an intermediate stop or with a reduced load.
The practical consequence. A seven-hundred-kilometre leg the AW139 flies direct, where half of the medium class needs a refuelling point. On a regular rotation that is one ground operation fewer on every trip and one fewer reason to lose the schedule.
Cabin: 2.7 × 2.12 × 1.42 metres
About eight cubic metres. The 2.12 m width gives full rows across; the 1.42 m height means an adult sits without pressing into the ceiling.
The key design decision is a cabin with no structural members inside the volume. The floor is flat, no posts divide the space, and the layout is built around the task as a whole.
From that come three different aircraft on one airframe:
Corporate and VIP. Six to ten seats, leather, sound insulation, entertainment systems. The VIP interior programme comes from the factory.
Dense passenger. Up to fifteen seats. This is how offshore transport to oil and gas platforms and crew rotation fly.
Special mission. Medical modules, hoist, searchlight, thermal imager, weather radar — air ambulance and search and rescue fits.
Moving between configurations takes work and paperwork. When sourcing an aircraft, look at the layout that is in it now and cost the conversion as a separate line.
Engines and power margin
Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6C-67Cs at about 1,679 shp each. The power margin covers a hover with one engine out — which is the reason a twin is taken for flights over water, over a city and to sites without approaches.
For offshore work and flights over a large city that is a condition of entry. For a corporate task it is a margin that shows itself on a hot day with a loaded aircraft.
Engine maintenance runs under hourly cost programmes. The status of the programme is the first thing read in the paperwork: it affects both the price and the first-year budget. How an hour of helicopter flight is calculated I covered in a separate article.
Takeoff weight and the increase kit
Base maximum takeoff weight is 6,400 kg. Optionally an increased gross weight kit takes it to 6,800 or 7,000 kg.
The gain is four hundred kilograms in the first case and six hundred in the second. It converts into either fuel or people and cargo. Which of the two is calculated from the particular route network: six hundred kilograms is either about an hour of additional flight or seven people with hand baggage.
When inspecting an aircraft the kit is verified in the paperwork: installed, documented, in force. A seller's words that the helicopter "goes to seven tonnes" are checked against the records.

This reads as follows. On range the AW139 and the H175 run level and pull away from the rest of the class by two hundred kilometres and more. On speed the AW139 leads the table. On capacity it gives way to the H175, the AW189 and the Mi-8: where a crew of twenty-five has to move, a different class is chosen.
Versions: what stands behind the letters
AB139 — early Agusta-Bell aircraft built up to 2005, the first production examples.
AW139 with the short nose — the original production configuration.
AW139 with the extended nose — an enlarged nose fairing with an additional avionics bay, standard on later aircraft.
AW139 VIP/VVIP — corporate and head-of-state cabins.
AW139 EMS/SAR — air ambulance and search and rescue fits.
AW139 offshore — the oil and gas transport version: emergency floats, rafts, reinforced corrosion protection.
AW139M, HH-139, MH-139A Grey Wolf — military versions, including aircraft for the Italian Air Force and the US Air Force.
US139 — assembly from the Philadelphia plant.
Assembly runs at Vergiate in Italy and in Philadelphia in the United States, and was previously carried out under licence in Russia at HeliVert. The place and year of assembly affect the set of documents and which service centre carries the aircraft onward.
Market and prices
More than 1,200 aircraft have been built, flying in more than 70 countries. The type became the basis for a whole family: the AW169 and the AW189 are built around the same cabin concept and the same crew training, which eases moving between types inside a fleet.
On prices the reference points are these, to my information: a new AW139 is around $14–15 million on the list, with VIP fits substantially higher; the pre-owned market runs $5–8 million with an average around $7 million; open listings in 2025 sat at $6.45–6.7 million.
The spread inside that range is explained by the same things as on any type: how much the aircraft has flown, the time remaining on life-limited components, the status of engine programmes, the layout and the year of the last interior work. What to look at in a particular aircraft
Hours flown and landings made. The two figures are kept separately and tell different stories. An offshore aircraft accumulates landings faster than a corporate one at the same total time.
Life-limited components. A helicopter has noticeably more of them than an aeroplane: blades, hubs, gearboxes, transmission assemblies. For each, the remaining life and the replacement cost are read.
The status of engine and gearbox programmes. Active cover passes to the new owner and counts as an asset in the deal.
Calendar checks. They fall due by date whether the aircraft flew or stood.
The layout and its paperwork. A medical module, a hoist, floats — every position is confirmed by documents.
Operating history. Offshore means sea air and corrosion treatment. Read the corrosion and treatment records; they say a great deal about the state of the airframe.
Conclusion
The AW139 covers the task of "a medium twin with a range of about a thousand kilometres, a roomy cabin and a power margin". In that combination it has one direct rival in the class on figures — the H175, which takes capacity.
Beyond that the particular aircraft decides: the time remaining on life-limited components, the status of programmes, the increased gross weight kit, the layout and the completeness of the paperwork.
