How the Bombardier Global 5000 differs from the Global 6000, 5500, G550 and Falcon 7X: a 2.41 m cabin, 9,630 km of range, two generations by take-off weight, and price.

Global 5000: how it differs from its rivals

The Global 5000 was born by subtraction. Bombardier took the finished Global Express airframe, shortened the cabin, removed the tail fuel tank and brought the take-off weight down. What came out was a 12.42 m cabin with the widest cross-section in the class and 9,630 km of range. Against the full-length aircraft of the same family, the Global 6000, that is 0.8 m of cabin and 1,482 km of range. Here is what the trade buys an owner, where the Global 5000 beats the G550 and the Falcon 7X, and where it gives ground.

Cabin dimensions and take-off weights are book figures for the types. The money is a market benchmark from open sources, to my knowledge. The price of an individual aircraft is calculated from its records.

What exactly was taken out of the Global Express

The programme was announced in October 2001 and launched in February 2002; first flight came on 7 March 2003 and the type entered service in April 2005. The brief was narrow: cover the shorter-range segment while keeping the donor's cabin cross-section.

Out went 0.8 m of cabin length, the tail fuel tank and part of the take-off weight. What stayed was the same wing, the same BR710 engines and the same 2.41 by 1.88 m cross-section.

The consequence shows up in the tail: the rest area is smaller than the Global 6000's and a sleeping layout packs in tighter. The club and conference zones are full size.

The two generations differ in range

The type went through two states, and listings rarely spell this out.

The dividing line is April 2008. Take-off weight went up to 92,500 lb and maximum range gained 400 nautical miles: the book 9,630 km at M 0.85 applies to aircraft built after that date. Earlier airframes hold 740 km less, unless the modification was carried out and documented.

Seven hundred and forty kilometres are invisible on a Moscow–Dubai leg. Across the Atlantic they land exactly on the boundary beyond which a technical stop at Shannon or Keflavik goes into the flight plan — an extra hour on the ground and fuel at local prices.

Cabin width is the type's main argument

2.41 m across, against 2.24 m in the G550. Those seventeen centimetres show up in a club four: space appears between the seat and the aisle, and on a nine-hour leg you feel it.

The Global 5000 cabin is roughly a metre shorter than the G550's. Gulfstream gives you length and an extra living zone; Bombardier gives you width in every zone.

The Falcon 7X splits into three zones in a typical 12–14 seat layout: club, a conference group of four, and a divan. Its cabin is the shortest of the five, and on cross-section the aircraft sits between the Global and the G550 — seven centimetres behind the first, ten ahead of the second.

Speed: the shortened aircraft's practical trump card

Maximum M 0.89 was common to every BR710-powered Global, and at launch the Global 5000 was among the fastest aircraft in the class. Against the Falcon 7X and its roughly 850 km/h, the difference adds up to an hour on a long leg.

Against the G550 the speed gap is small. Against the Global 5500 there is none: the Pearl aircraft's wing was profiled for M 0.90.

Where the Global 5000 gives ground

Range. 9,630 km against 11,112 km for the Global 6000 and 12,500 km for the G550. Any leg beyond 85 per cent of book range flies with a technical stop or a cut payload. For the Global 5000 that is about 8,200 km; for the G550, about 10,600 km. New York out of Moscow closes with caveats for the shortened aircraft.

Market depth. By 2018 there were 224 aircraft of the type in service, and eight or nine are openly for sale at any one time. More than six hundred G550s were built, and a shortlist there comes together in a fortnight. A narrow fleet works against you on the way in and on the way out of the asset.

Avionics on early aircraft. Honeywell Primus 2000XP was fitted until 2012. Bringing a Global Express family aircraft up to current communication and surveillance requirements costs $0.7–1.2m, and Ka-band or Starlink satellite communications add $0.5–1m, to my knowledge. Aircraft from 2012 onwards carry the Bombardier Vision flight deck on Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion and remove that line from the budget.

Fuel burn. The BR710 gives away up to 13 per cent in fuel against the Pearl 15 on the Global 5500, on 9 per cent less thrust. Across three hundred hours a year that difference is money.

Global 5000 and Global 5500: how the line ended

The successor was shown at EBACE in May 2018, certified by Transport Canada on 24 September 2019 and in service from June 2020. Global 5000 production ended in 2021.

The Global 5500 received Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines, a re-profiled wing, 10,900 km of range and a cabin in the idiom of the Global 7500 flagship with Nuage seating. The cabin geometry stayed as it was — 12.42 × 2.41 × 1.88 m — and take-off weight holds at the same 92,500 lb. The extra 1,270 km of range came from the engines and the wing.

In money they are different leagues: a used Global 5500 is valued at about $31m and a new one around $46–48m, while the Global 5000 starts at $10.5m, to my knowledge.

The confusion in listings

By October 2018 the Global Express, 5000 and 6000 family ran to 816 aircraft built, and the names inside it changed along the way. The Global Express XRS was renamed Global 6000 in 2011–2012. Listings reflect this imprecisely.

Three checks settle the question. The type comes from the records; a listing headline is not a source here. The date of the take-off weight modification to 92,500 lb, if the aircraft predates 2008. And the flight deck: Honeywell Primus 2000XP means the first generation, Bombardier Vision means 2012 or later. The senior aircraft is covered in the Global 6000 specifications.

Who the type suits

Global 5000 — regular eight to ten hour legs, a party of ten to fourteen, cabin width mattering more than outright range, and an entry budget into the ultra-long-range class capped below $20m.

Global 6000 — the same work plus fifteen hundred kilometres of range and eighty centimetres of cabin. You pay in three tonnes of take-off weight at every airport fee and an entry price around two and a half times higher.

G550 — a route network with regular twelve-hour legs and a need to exit the asset quickly. The comparison is covered separately in how the G550 differs.

Falcon 7X — short runways and steep approaches in the regular schedule, London City included. Three PW307A engines and the Dassault wing do that work, and a take-off weight of 31,751 kg against 42,000 kg takes ten tonnes off the basis for airport charges. You pay in three sets of engine events instead of two, and half a metre less cabin.

Global 5500 — a fresh airframe, current engines and factory support at three times the budget.

Conclusion

The Global 5000 sells the width of the Global Express cabin at a price the ultra-long-range class does not usually show. It gives up 1,482 km against the full-length aircraft of the family, 0.8 m of cabin, and a narrow fleet.

After that the individual aircraft decides: the date of the take-off weight modification, the flight deck, the remaining life on each engine and the status of the CorporateCare programme, the 120-month check, and hours and cycles as separate figures.
