Bombardier Global 5000: specifications, range, cabin

The Global 5000 covers 9,630 km at 902 km/h and cruises at 51,000 ft. Three different aircraft live under that one name, though: pre-April 2008, post-April 2008, and from 2012 on. Here are the book figures, what separates the generations, and how that difference reads in a sale listing.

Where the aircraft came from

The programme was announced in October 2001, first flight came on 7 March 2003, and the type entered service in April 2005.

Bombardier took the Global Express and shortened it: the cabin lost 0.8 m, the tail fuel tank went, and maximum take-off weight came down. The result was an aircraft of the same cross-section and the same speed with less range and a lower entry price. Production ended in 2021 in favour of the Global 5500.

Three generations under one name

The listing says "Global 5000"; the logbook shows one of three aircraft.

The gap between the first and second rows is 400 nautical miles, about 740 km: on a route that is the line between a non-stop leg and a technical stop.

The gap between the second and third rows is measured in upgrade money. Pre-2012 aircraft with Primus 2000XP need modernisation to meet current surveillance and communication requirements. Ka-band or Starlink satellite connectivity is generally absent on pre-2015 aircraft, and fitting it runs $0.5–1M, to my knowledge.

Range: what sits behind 9,630 kilometres

The book figure is calculated at a given load, an M 0.85 cruise and standard fuel reserves. Three things reduce it in service.

Load. Every passenger above the design number takes fuel with them. A full cabin of 16 with baggage costs hundreds of kilometres.

Wind. Headwinds on east–west routes eat a noticeable share of range, and how much depends on season and flight level.

Departure aerodrome. A short runway, heat or elevation limits take-off weight, and fuel load with it.

The working planning rule: any leg longer than 85% of book range means a technical stop or a reduced load. For the Global 5000 that puts about 8,200 km inside the range you can plan without caveats.

What falls inside that radius: Moscow — New York, Moscow — Hong Kong, Dubai — Tokyo, London — Dubai with margin. Pacific legs and non-stop Europe to Australia belong to the Global 6000 at 11,112 km and above.

My sources do not quote a required runway length at maximum take-off weight for this type separately: it comes from the flight manual of the individual aircraft. As a neighbouring benchmark, the Global 6000 at 45,132 kg MTOW needs about 1,890 m, and the Global 5000 is three tonnes lighter.

A 12.42 metre cabin

Width 2.41 m and height 1.88 m: the cross-section came over from the Global Express intact, and only the fuselage was shortened. Someone 185 cm tall walks the aisle with their head slightly tilted.

The 12.42 m length divides the cabin into three zones without crowding: a working club four, a dining or divan group in the middle, a rest area aft. Against the Global 6000 the aircraft gives up about 0.8 m of length, and it comes out of the aft zone.

The typical layout is 13–16 seats, the maximum 19. Crew is 2–4: two pilots plus a flight attendant on long legs.

Engines, speed and ceiling

Two Rolls-Royce BR710A2-20s at 14,750 lb of thrust. The same variant is fitted to the Global 6000, and the Gulfstream G550 uses the BR710C4-11 from the same family. Fleet experience is extensive and the service network is well established. Hourly burn, from the Global 6000 analysis with these same engines, runs on the order of 1.9–2.1 tonnes per hour depending on level and weight.

A maximum Mach number of 0.89 kept the Global 5000 among the fastest aircraft in its class at launch. The 51,000 ft service ceiling is an upper level the main traffic does not reach: a direct routing where aircraft at 39,000 ft are routed around, and less turbulence on a long leg.

The range difference between the 5000 and the 6000 is 1,482 km; the difference in median price is about $16M. That gives a simple sourcing rule: if your route network fits inside an 8,200 km working leg, the Global 6000's range goes unused and you have paid for it anyway.

At purchase the type is verified against the logbook. A Global Express presented as a Global 5000, and an early Global 5000 presented as a post-2008 aircraft, are both routine on the pre-owned market.

The market: nine offers and a soft decline

Between eight and nine aircraft stay openly for sale against a fleet of several hundred. Asking prices run $10.5–20.8M, the average of advertised prices is $10.745M, and the median is about $11.0–11.3M, to my knowledge. The twelve-month trend is a 3% decline.

Build years on the market run 2005–2017. The bulk sits in 2007–2009, and those aircraft set the bottom of the band. Aircraft from 2013–2017 trade quietly, on price on application, and their real level is $15–21M, to my knowledge.

Average time flown across the market is about 6,300 hours; aircraft below 3,500 hours sell faster and hold a premium.

One telling listing: a 2014 aircraft offered at $18.5M with a condition attached — subject to the 120-month inspection being carried out, to my knowledge. The price is tied directly to an expensive calendar task, and for this type that is normal.

What to check on an individual aircraft

CorporateCare status. The engine programme is critical here: an aircraft without cover gives up $1–1.5M on this type, to my knowledge. Live cover transfers to the new owner and counts as an asset in the deal.

The 120-month inspection. Done or due, and on whose money — the key bargaining question on the type.

Avionics. Primus 2000XP or Bombardier Vision. The answer sets how much upgrading is needed for surveillance and communication requirements in the airspace the aircraft will actually fly in.

The ratio of hours to landings. Many European aircraft accumulate a high cycle count on modest hours, and the airframe wears by cycles.

Records. Gaps, outstanding service bulletins, components without verified provenance. Every item turns into either a discount off the price or a first-year ownership budget. The procedure for working through documents is in what the logbooks show before an inspection.

Conclusion

The Global 5000 covers the mission "up to sixteen people, a leg of up to eight thousand kilometres, work and rest in flight" at a market median of about $11.3M, to my knowledge. The cabin cross-section here is the one found on aircraft twice the price, and the entry price is explained by the age of most of the offer.

April 2008 and 2012 split the type into three different aircraft by range and by upgrade budget. That needs settling before the deposit.
