Bombardier Challenger 650: how it compares with its rivals

The Challenger 650 is the only Challenger 600-family aircraft still in production, and it carries the widest cabin in its class at 2.41 m. The same budget buys a Legacy 650, a Falcon 2000LXS or a Praetor 600, and the Gulfstream G400 is arriving behind them. Here is where the 650 wins, where it gives ground, and why choosing this type comes down to two or three aircraft in the whole world.

On the Praetor 600 the new and pre-owned prices sit almost on top of each other: a $23.995M list price against a $24M median of pre-owned offers, to my knowledge. The type holds value unusually well — a 2022 aircraft goes for roughly $21M.

What 2.41 metres of width buys
All five aircraft carry the same group over the same leg. They part company on cabin geometry.
The Challenger 650 wins on width: 2.41 m against 2.34 m on the Falcon 2000LXS, 2.31 m on the G400, 2.10 m on the Legacy 650 and 2.08 m on the Praetor 600. Thirty-three centimetres separate the extremes. In a club four they turn into an aisle a person walks down past a seated passenger without brushing their shoulder.
Height is where the 650 gives ground: 1.83 m against 1.88 m on the Falcon 2000LXS and the G400. Those five centimetres decide whether someone 185 cm tall walks the aisle upright or with their head tilted.
My sources do not quote a cabin length for the Challenger 650 separately. The airframe is the one from the Challenger 605, and the 605 has an 8.66 m cabin. For comparison, the Legacy 650 has about 12.9 m across three zones, the G400 11.07 m, the Praetor 600 8.18 m.
The Challenger 650 is a wide aircraft with a short cabin: two club zones, a divan bed, a full galley and a lavatory. The Legacy 650 is long and narrow: three zones, a proper sleeping berth, a noticeably larger baggage hold. Working at a table for four is better in the Challenger; an overnight flight with separated zones is better in the Legacy.
A 41,000 ft ceiling: where the 650 gives ground
The Challenger 650 has a 12,000 m service ceiling. The Falcon 2000LXS has 14,326 m, the Praetor 600 13,716 m, the G400 15,545 m. The gap reaches three and a half kilometres.
The upper levels are less crowded, and most weather fronts stay below them. An aircraft that climbs to 45,000–51,000 ft gets a direct routing more often. At 41,000 ft the Challenger 650 lives in the airline layer and waits its turn for a level on busy tracks. Speed follows: 850 km/h against 900 km/h on the Falcon 2000LXS, which on a five-hour leg is 17–18 minutes.
Range on all five sits in a 7,200–7,778 km band and barely separates the types. Any leg longer than 85% of book range means a technical stop or a reduced load — for the Challenger 650 that puts about 6,300 km inside the range you can plan without caveats.
Production is still running, and that counts on its own
The Legacy 650 is out of production, the Falcon 2000LXS and Praetor 600 are in build, and the G400 is in certification with nothing on the market yet. A live production line gives a pre-owned buyer factory support, parts and a predictable service horizon. The scale of the family: more than 1,060 Challenger 600s built by October 2018.
Factory avionics are the second half of the same argument. The 650 carries Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Advanced with synthetic vision. The Challenger 604 has Pro Line 4, and an upgrade package for ADS-B Out, FANS 1/A and CPDLC runs $600k–1M, to my knowledge. On the 650 the factory has already closed that first-year line.
Inside the family and on the market

The money buys year of build, factory avionics, an updated interior and remaining life. The number of offers runs the other way: eighteen aircraft to choose from on the 604, two or three in the whole world on the 650, against live buying interest.
A thin market changes the negotiation. Room to move on the 650 is 3–5%, and sellers of aircraft on full programmes hold firm; the typical discount on a Challenger 604, for comparison, is 8–12%. The spread inside the offer tells the story: listings have carried a 2019 aircraft with 1,930 hours and a 2015 aircraft with 6,912 hours, and the difference in fair value between them reaches $4–5M, to my knowledge.

Who it suits, and who should look next door
Challenger 650 — twelve people, work at a table in flight, transatlantic legs, cabin width and factory equipment as priorities. A separate line is special missions: air ambulance and patrol aircraft are built on the type, and Switzerland's Rega flies it in a medical configuration.
Legacy 650 — overnight flights with separated zones and large baggage on the same budget.
Falcon 2000LXS — short runways, a high level and speed. A new aircraft costs $36–38M against $32–33M for a new 650, to my knowledge.
Praetor 600 — the same radius in a smaller aircraft with a 45,000 ft ceiling.
Gulfstream G400 — a 51,000 ft ceiling and 7,778 km of range. It becomes a real option once deliveries start.
One boundary applies to all five: at a hundred hours a year and legs under three hours, any of them carries air. Classes and their price bands are set out in the categories of business jets.
What to check on an individual aircraft
The CF34-3B engine programme — MSP Gold, JSSI or ESP — is the main price lever on the type; verify it against the programme paperwork, because payments sometimes stop long before a sale. After that come the ratio of hours to cycles (an aircraft out of a fractional programme accumulates cycles far faster for the same hours), the connectivity fit — Gogo AVANCE, Ka-band, Starlink, since an aircraft in this segment without modern onboard internet does not trade — and the cleanliness of the records. Conclusion
The Challenger 650 beats its budget neighbours on cabin width, factory avionics and a live production line. It gives up ceiling, speed and cabin height. The Legacy 650 answers with cabin length and baggage, the Falcon 2000LXS with altitude and runway performance, the Praetor 600 with entry price, the G400 with the numbers of an aircraft still to come.
After that the individual aircraft decides: two or three are openly for sale, and the difference between them in fair value reaches five million dollars.
