How much a Bombardier Challenger 650 costs: purchase and running costs

A used Challenger 650 is asked at $17–22 million with a median around $21.2 million; a new aircraft in completion runs $32–33 million, to my knowledge. The type's main peculiarity for a buyer sits right next to the price: two or three aircraft are openly for sale worldwide. Here is what makes up the corridor, how to read a market that thin, and what to budget for running the aircraft.

Neither listing carries a price. Both go out as "make offer" and "please call", which is the standard picture on a type with few transactions. The seller does not want to fix a public benchmark, and the buyer enters negotiation without a reference point.
The practical conclusion follows. On the 650, a median of $21.2 million works as a reference figure for a bank and an insurer. The real price of a specific aircraft is shown only by the records and by a competing offer on adjacent types.
Why the market is this thin
The type has been in production since 2015 and remains in build. The aircraft are relatively young, and the first wave of resales on the type is still ahead. A noticeable share of the fleet sits with fractional programmes and charter operators, which hold aircraft to the end of their operating cycle.
What that changes for a buyer:
Less time to think than usual. A suitable aircraft, out of two or three on the market, goes quickly.
Shorter negotiation. With one competing aircraft worldwide, the seller's position is strong.
Look wider than one type. Neighbours in the class with the same 7,400 km of range offer a completely different entry price.

What moves the price of a specific aircraft
Engine maintenance programmes. The most expensive line in a revaluation. A CF34-3B pair outside an MSP or JSSI programme takes $1.5–2 million off the price on the neighbouring Challenger 604, to my knowledge. The risk of an overhaul, if the programme is declined, passes entirely to the buyer.
How much the aircraft has flown, and in what regime. On the Challenger 604 the watershed runs at roughly 8,000 hours: beyond that comes a deep discount for the heavy checks ahead. Cycles are counted separately from hours: the airframe wears by take-offs and landings, and an aircraft off short legs accumulates them several times faster at the same hours.
Position relative to calendar checks. Some work falls due by date regardless of whether the aircraft flew or sat. A freshly completed 144-month check on a 604 adds $700,000–1 million to fair value, to my knowledge. On the 650 that counter is already approaching serious marks on early 2015–2016 aircraft.
Cabin condition. An interior refit on a large jet costs as much as a good light jet: on the 604 the order of magnitude is $0.8–1.5 million, to my knowledge. The year of the last refit is asked separately from the build year.
Where the aircraft came from. An aircraft out of a fractional programme has flown intensive commercial service and kept its records to operator standards. A corporate aircraft with low hours arrives with a different set of questions: long periods parked, return to service, calendar.
Records. Gaps in the logbooks, outstanding service bulletins, components without confirmed provenance. Every item converts into money and comes off the price. The procedure is in what the logbooks show before an inspection.
New against used
The gap between a list price of $32–33 million and a median of $21.2 million is about eleven million dollars, to my knowledge. For that, a buyer of a new aircraft gets a warranty, a full configuration to their own specification, fresh engine programmes, and a history with no questions in it.
A buyer of a used aircraft gets an aircraft today instead of a factory slot, and the money left over for a maintenance reserve. With two or three listings for sale, "today" is conditional here: waiting for a suitable aircraft takes months.
Running costs: structure instead of an average
Naming an average figure for the type is pointless — it depends on your annual hours, your base, the maintenance arrangement and crew composition. Structure is what works.
Fixed costs run all year. Two pilots plus a flight attendant on long legs, hangar or parking, insurance, calendar checks, continuing airworthiness management, aircraft management. They are paid even if the aircraft sits for a whole quarter.
Variable costs are counted from hours. Fuel, airport and navigation charges, ground handling, line maintenance, contributions to reserves for engine and component overhaul.
Annual hours decide more than anything else. At a hundred hours the fixed block lands on each hour as a hundredth; at four hundred, as a four-hundredth. Same aircraft, and the full cost per hour differs fourfold.
On the neighbouring Challenger 604, the economic case for owning outright appears from roughly 200–350 hours a year, to my knowledge. Below that mark it is more honest to price charter or fractional schemes. The full arithmetic of fixed and variable lines is in running a private jet.
One line the factory closes on the 650: avionics. On the 604 an upgrade package for ADS-B Out, FANS 1/A and CPDLC costs $600,000–1 million, to my knowledge, while Pro Line 21 Advanced on the 650 is standard.
What to do
Set a budget inside the $17–22 million band, to my knowledge, and add a reserve for the engines and the next calendar check straight away.
Ask for time remaining on both engines in hours for each candidate, plus documentation of hourly-cost programme status. A seller's word does not work here: payments sometimes stop six months before a sale.
Take hours and cycles as separate figures and look at the ratio. It shows what the aircraft has been doing all these years.
Establish the date of the last and the next calendar check. On 2015–2016 aircraft that is the main first-year budget item.
Work out your actual hours over the past two years from your flight records. That figure decides whether the class fits.
Keep the Challenger 605 and 604 in view, with the same range. With a threefold difference in entry price, a comparison on total cost of ownership sometimes changes the decision.
