Accepting an aircraft after paint and refurbishment

A full interior refurbishment on a Challenger 604 runs $0.8–1.5 million, to my knowledge. Exterior paint is a separate estimate, and downtime sits on top of both: while the aircraft is in the shop it earns nothing. Everything that money bought is accepted in a single day.
Collecting the aircraft from the shop is a procedure of its own, with its own signed report. Here is what gets checked before that signature, and what the owner pays for after it.
The scope document is the basis of the acceptance
What you may reject is set by the scope: the paint scheme with enamel codes, materials specified position by position, the list of components being replaced, the extent of teardown and reinstall. Anything outside that list becomes a separate conversation about money on handover day.
The same document fixes the release date and the procedure when it slips. Dates slip here regularly: corrosion appears under the old coating, veneer arrives flawed, seats come back from the upholstery shop late.
What gets checked on the paint
Preparation under the coating. The valuable part of the work is hidden — stripping, treatment of any corrosion found, skin repair. Ask for stage photographs before primer goes on; afterwards nothing can be verified.
Surfaces in raking light. The aircraft is looked at in the hangar and outside, at an angle: runs, orange peel, dust inclusions, shade variation between panels, transitions across joints.
Boundaries and masking. Control surface and aileron edges, winglets, antenna radomes, anti-ice zones, access panels, pitot probes. Excess paint comes off later by hand.
Stencils and markings. Registration marks to the requirements of the state of registry, emergency markings, fuelling point placards. A missing marking stops the release.
Control surface balancing. A layer of paint changes their mass. Surfaces are reweighed and the result is issued as a document.
What gets checked on the interior
Fit and gaps. Panels, veneer, tables and lockers, with cabin lighting on and off.
Mechanics. Seats through every position, tracks, locks, belts, swivel and tracking, divan conversion, cabinet doors.
Systems. Galley, lighting scenes, entertainment system, screens, outlets, connectivity. Checked on ground power, each point separately.
Material certificates. Every batch of leather, carpet, veneer and fabric carries a burn certificate. Without those papers the interior stays unaccepted.
Approvals for changes. Reconfiguration, a moved bulkhead, a replaced monument all go through approved data. Work without it resurfaces at the next sale and at re-registration.
Weighing and balance. Paint and interior shift the empty weight by tens of kilograms. A new report is part of the handover package.

The shop quotes its own timing per item, against its workload and the scope. Findings under the old coating push the schedule to the right.
Combining paint with a heavy check saves the downtime entirely: the work runs in parallel on one slot.
What you sign on the way out
A report listing open discrepancies. Each one carries a completion date and an owner of the cost.
Part of the sum is held back until that list closes. The size of the retention is agreed in the contract before the aircraft goes into the shop.
The document pack: weight and balance report, control surface balancing document, burn certificates, approvals for changes, shop warranty.
A check flight closes what the ground will not show — airspeed and altitude indications, control forces, unusual noise. A painted-over pitot probe reads wrong, and you find that in the air.
Habits that cost money
Collecting the aircraft in rain or darkness. Coating defects show in daylight on a dry surface.
Accepting without stage photographs of the preparation. Anything under the paint is beyond verification.
Signing a report with an empty discrepancy list. Verbal promises from the shop cost more after handover.
Scheduling a flight for handover day. The schedule in this kind of work moves almost every time.
Conclusion
Paint and interior are the most visible result of anything money buys on an aircraft. That result lasts exactly as long as the preparation underneath it held, and it is verified on a single day — handover day.
