Phenom 300: what sets it apart from its rivals in the light class
Eleven years running in first place for deliveries in the light class, and more than half the light jet market since 2012 — figures like that are never an accident. Here is what keeps the Phenom 300 in that position, and the cases where it is not the one that wins.
What actually sets it apart
A 45 000 ft ceiling on a light jet. That is the flight level of the heavy machines. The practical point is not prestige: the aircraft flies above the main traffic and above most of the weather, which means fewer deviations around storm fronts and a more predictable time en route. Most rivals in the class do not climb that high.
A speed of M 0.80. The top of the scale for the light class, and it was raised from M 0.78 in the 2020 enhanced version through the uprated PW535E1 engines. On a three-hour leg the difference turns into minutes you can feel.
A cabin that was not an afterthought. The interior was developed with BMW Designworks, and this is a case where the designer's involvement shows: the Phenom 300 cabin reads like an aircraft a class above. The height of 1.50 m means you cannot stand up straight, as in every light jet, but the width of 1.62 m and the quality of the finish are noticeably above the class average.
Operating economics. A reputation for low costs in its class is one of the reasons fractional ownership operators buy it in volume, where the economics are counted hard. NetJets ordered up to 100 aircraft, and that is not a goodwill gesture but a calculation.
The main argument nobody thinks about when choosing
Fleet size. Nearly a thousand aircraft in service — 500 Phenom 300 and 407 Phenom 300E, with 938 aircraft documented in total.
For an owner that matters more than another hundred kilometres of range, and here is why:
- a service network that works — there are specialists on the type, not "one per country";
- parts you can get — no waiting weeks for a component;
- a predictable pre-owned market — around 30 aircraft for sale at any one time, so there is something to compare against and someone to sell to;
- reliable price statistics — for rare types they simply do not exist.
Liquidity is part of the price, just deferred. On a rare type you save when you buy and lose when you sell — and you lose more.
Where the Phenom 300 loses
An honest list, because there is no such thing as a universal aircraft.
You need full standing height in the cabin. A metre and a half of height is a metre and a half. On legs longer than three hours the question comes up, and it is answered by moving up to midsize, not by choosing a different light jet.
You need a sleeping space. Nobody in the light class has one, and the Phenom is no exception.
You need non-stop legs across a continent. 2 010 nautical miles is good range for the class, but that is a different scale of mission. And the figure is quoted with five passengers: load eight with baggage and it comes down.
A lot of baggage with a full cabin. The baggage compartment is limited. Six people with skis or golf bags may not fit, even if everyone fits in the seats. That is exactly the case where moving up a class is justified.
You need connectivity in flight on an early aircraft. Machines before the 300E have no Wi-Fi, and a Gogo Avance retrofit runs to $200–350 thousand. If you are choosing an early aircraft, that is not an option, it is part of the price.

The key point: the move from Prodigy to Prodigy Touch was a factory decision. An early machine cannot be brought up to 300E standard, and the difference is locked into the price for good.

Conclusion
The Phenom 300 wins not on a single parameter but on the sum of them: altitude, speed, cabin, costs and — above all — the size of the fleet, which makes ownership predictable.
It loses where something else is needed: standing height in the cabin, a sleeping space, intercontinental range. Those are not shortcomings of the aircraft but the boundary of the class.
