How much a Citation Excel / XLS costs: 2026 prices and upkeep

The 560XL family has passed a thousand aircraft delivered — a record for the midsize class. That ubiquity gives a buyer what rare types never do: a visible market, comprehensible prices and predictable resale.

The price corridor

What Price
New Citation Ascend, factory list $16.7 million (Q2 2025)
New Ascend, base specification around $15.5 million, up to $17 million with options
New XLS+ in maximum specification $16.11 million (2023)
XLS+ on the pre-owned market $6.5 – 9.0 million, averaging around $7.4 million
Ten-year-old XLS around $4 million (2018 valuation)
A new Excel in 1999 around $8.7 million

Note the gap between a new aircraft and the pre-owned market: a fresh Ascend costs twice a good XLS+. For a type built for thirty years running without a fundamental change of platform that is normal, and it works in favour of the pre-owned buyer.

Full specifications are on the model page.

What moves the price of an individual aircraft

Generation. Excel, XLS, XLS+, Gen2, Ascend. The key step is the move to a glass flight deck in the XLS. A base Excel cannot be retrofitted to it, and the difference is fixed in the price permanently.

Cycles. The Excel works a great deal on charter on short legs, and there take-offs and landings accumulate incomparably faster for the same hours. On this type life remaining in cycles matters more than in hours.

Which fleet the aircraft came out of. The largest operators are NetJets and the charter companies. A commercial aircraft usually has impeccable documentation and regular maintenance alongside heavy wear. A private one has less wear alongside a less rigorous approach to the paperwork. The documents decide.

The state of the documentation. Gaps in the logbooks, outstanding service bulletins, components without confirmed provenance. Every item converts into money and comes off the price.

Age. Base Excels were built up to 2004, the youngest of them over twenty years old. The type is common, support is established, parts are there — but such aircraft need checking particularly attentively.

On the cost of upkeep

I give no table of figures here, and here is why.

The purchase price is a market quantity, visible across dozens of listings. The cost of upkeep depends on your annual hours, the region of basing, the maintenance arrangement, the make-up of the crew and the storage conditions. A market average gets in the way here: decisions get taken on it that later fail to match the facts.

The structure of the costs:

Fixed costs run regardless of hours. Crew, parking, insurance, calendar maintenance checks, continuing airworthiness management. They are paid even if the aircraft stands in the hangar for the whole quarter.

Variable costs are counted from hours. Fuel, line maintenance, accruals to the reserve for engine and component overhaul.

Annual hours are the main lever. At a hundred hours a year the fixed costs land on each hour as a hundredth; at four hundred, as a four-hundredth. One aircraft, and the hourly cost differs by a factor of four.

Across seven years in business aviation I have got used to counting upkeep as a share of what the aircraft is worth: in my experience that is 10–20% a year — crew and their training, the agreement with an operator, parking, fuel. A business jet in practice flies 300–400 hours a year, and when a buyer has no tasks on that scale, I talk him out of the purchase.

Hence a practical rule: the aircraft that stands unused is the most expensive of all. Count real hours from the tasks that already exist.

The order of work

  1. Choose the generation that fits your budget: base Excel, XLS or XLS+. The band between the extremes exceeds 4 million dollars.
  2. Calculate annual hours honestly, from the documents of past years.
  3. Shortlist 3–5 aircraft and ask for the logbooks before any conversation about price.
  4. Check life remaining in cycles separately from hours.
  5. Convert the findings on documents and equipment into money — that is your negotiating instrument.

The prices in this article are market reference points gathered from the open marketplaces, to my information. The value of a particular aircraft is calculated from its documents, its hours and its specification.
